読書の記録を残すために、本を読みながらメモを取るようにしている。
『これからの正義の話をしよう』は、ハーバード大学政治哲学教授のマイケル・サンデル氏が投げかける「正義の概念」について、深く掘り下げた議論を展開している哲学書である。
本の中で出てくる電車の話は、多くの人が議論する倫理的ジレンマの一つで、世界中で話題になった。
「あなたは路面電車の運転手で、時速60マイルで走行している。
途中には、5人の作業員が線路に立っていて、あなたは電車を止めようとするがブレーキが利かない。
列車がそのまま進むと、5人の作業員が死亡してしまうが、しかし、あなたは側線に進路を変更することができる。
その場合、側線にいる1人の作業員が死亡することになる。
あなたはどちらの選択をするべきか？」
多数決や数の論理で考える民主主義の発想に慣れている場合、一見すると単純な選択のように思えるが、実際には様々な倫理的・道徳的問題を含んでいる。
例えば、大多数の幸福を追求するために、少数を犠牲にすることが正しくて正当化できることなのか？人命の尊厳はどのように評価されるべきか？
この話は、ビジネスや政治などの社会的な領域でも起こり得る倫理的ジレンマに、どのような選択が正しいかを考えるための問いかけである。
